Karim Diane — or better known as Team Karim to his fans — helped raise over one million dollars in medical supplies for Africa’s Ivory Coast. Karim has loved to sing all his life, but it wasn’t until a few years ago that the college student uploaded a few videos of his singing to YouTube that he discovered others enjoyed his voice, too. Team Karim’s videos of him singing songs have a total of some 3 million views. This showed Karim how incredibly useful social media can be and decided he wanted to find a way to us it for making a positive difference.
Both of Karim’s parents are from the region of west Africa, and when the teen visited Congo he saw how desperately in need of medical supplies some communities were. Karim and his father began using social media to reach out to others to mobilize in collecting usable medical supplies to send over to clinics in need. Karim and his brothers contacted award-winning musician Ryan Leslie to throw a concert “Live From the Republic” with proceeds going towards shipping the supplies over.
Both Karim and his father said they had their eyes opened up by the experience to how much good somebody can do with a little motivation and social media. “Partnering with him has made me realize we can change the world a little bit,” said Karim. “We could do some next level stuff.”
