This Artist ‘Photographing’ His Dreams Will Give You Nightmares

Zdzisław Beksiński was a Polish artist, prolific from the 1960’s until his his brutal murder in 2005. Fascinated with death, decay, eroticism, abstractionism and mysticism, Beksiński often depicted dark, mind-bending scenes with creatures only conceivable in the darkness of a nightmare. He never gave titles to his paintings, wanting to avoid any metaphorical interpretations of his eerie works. Beksiński used to say, “I wish to paint in such a manner as if I were photographing dreams.”

Beksiński’s internationally coveted works of dystopian, surrealist, nightmarish scenarios, are both deeply unnerving and strangely mesmerizing. Perhaps it is because he has succeeded in capturing a dream world that we all have payed a visit to. Below is our selection of Beksiński’s most enchanting works.

This is the last painting Beksiński ever created. It was completed on the day of his death.
