The initial title for this article was “The universe is crazy, like, it’s not even real, man” but that just seemed a little too space-case-ish. Prepare to have your mind obliterated though — physicists might have proof that our universe is just a computer simulation. Whaa?? Huuuh?? Yes!
It’s been a long-proposed idea by both philosophers and popular culture that a civilization of substantial size and intelligence would eventually create a simulation universe if possible. From there on, there would be simulations created by simulations and so forth. Sort of like throwing a rock in a pond or the reflections in mirrored room. Therefore, if there are simulations upon simulations of a universe, there’s a strong possibility our universe is only one of those simulations.
Yes, it sounds like the talk of sci-fi fans who are toked up on the good stuff, but there is science by the University of Bonn in Germany to back it up.
Silas Beane and a team of researchers say in their study, “Constraints on the Universe as a Numerical Simulation,” that they have pointed out existing current simulations of the universe — and while small, put limits on physical laws.
The researchers made a computer simulation of the universe, that resembles our own. Being a simulation, the computer would put limits on, for example, the energy particles can posses within the program. Limits would be experienced by those living in the Sim universe (us), and something resembling these limits actually exists.
The entire thing is more than complicated enough to give you headache, but is also really fun to think about. Draw your own conclusions after checking out the study here. Just be sure to pop some Aspirin first.
And to go along with this topic of artificial universes, check out these stunning space images shot by NASA. You can’t help but wonder what else is out there in the ever-expanding universe.
