With July 4th having recently passed, fireworks are on the mind. The smoke has cleared and all that’s left now are the tinged paper shells of firecrackers and broken sticks of bottle rockets. The cheaply made — yet extremely fun — Chinese fireworks that so many of us buy each summer reveal their explosive designs in this set of cross section photos from Seattle-based photographer, Andrew Waits.

The photo series called, “Boom City” will hopefully give you a little more perspective into those m-80s and blackcats that so many of us can’t resist setting off each summer.
