Lots of people have that shelf in their house or stack of boxes in the attic that’s full of old books that haven’t been cracked open in years. While most people leave them to sit or eventually haul them down to a used bookstore, Guy Laramee has a different use for books – carve them up.
The multi-faceted artist has created a two series of incredible book carved landscapes. The hardcover cutaway landscape projects titled, Biblios and The Great Wall reveal mountain cliffs and valley streams carved into the dense pages. Guy then adds color to the newly created worlds within a world.
So I carve landscapes out of books and I paint Romantic landscapes. Mountains of disused knowledge return to what they really are: mountains. Piles of obsolete encyclopedias return to that which does not need to say anything, that which simply IS. Fogs and clouds erase everything we know, everything we think we are.”
It’s a very cool way to create something new out of something old.
