Melbourne’s Flinders Street Railway Station is About to Look Amazing

In the 1920s Melbourne’s Flinders railway station was one of the most trafficked in the world, shuffling in millions of Aussie commuters each year. Since then it has fallen into an unfortunate state of of degradation.

That’s hopefully all about to change in the near future with a complete renovation of the station under the direction of Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron.

While there aren’t any construction crews assembling just yet to begin the restoration process, the Victorian government is looking into possibly begining the project in the next two years. The new design was part of an architectural competition and Herzog & de Meuron’s plan includes translucent archways to shelter the trains and an outdoor concert venue on the Yarra River.

It’s a beautiful design that would unquestionably elevate any traveler’s experience. Herzog & de Meuron walked away with a $500K prize for their architectural vision. Not too shabby.
