In 2013, American photographer Steve McCurry was invited to visit and photograph a remote area of southwest Ethiopia known as the Omo Valley region. McCurry was hosted by Omo Child, a unique charity set up by Lale Lubuko and photographer John Rowe that aims to provide refuge and shelter for the children of the Omo Valley region who are considered “mingi” by their tribe.

Children who are classified as “mingi” are thought to be cursed and bearers of ill fortune on their tribe. Sadly, this superstitious label for children often ends in ritualistically killing of the child or being left alone in the harsh climate to die. Omo Child is working to change this through education and tribal governance.

While visiting the Omo Valley, Stever McCurry was able to capture the beautiful faces and people of the Kara and Surma tribes in a series of amazing photographs.
